BRETT PATTERSON
Born in Vancouver, Canada, Mr. Patterson began studying the piano at age five after his family moved to Salt Lake City, UT. He performed on the Utah Federation of Music Clubs Honors Recital every year from 1999-2002. Mr. Patterson was a founding chorister at the Madeleine Choir School in 1996. While at the Madeleine Choir School, Mr. Patterson was a soloist with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on their 1996 international Thanksgiving television broadcast. For two years he served as Head Chorister at the Cathedral of the Madeleine and received the Bishop’s Award for Outstanding Chorister of the Year upon graduation from the Choir School. Mr. Patterson began studying the organ at the age of eleven with Robert Ridgell, formerly organist and assistant director of music at the Cathedral of the Madeleine and now Associate Director of Music at Trinity Church, Wall Street, New York. In high school, Mr. Patterson continued his organ studies with Dr. Parley Belnap while continuing to be active in the music program at the Cathedral of the Madeleine as a member of the Cathedral Choir until 2002. In 2000 he sang with the Cathedral of the Madeleine Choir in the production of the PBS special “A Cathedral Christmas.”
Brett Patterson attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA for his undergraduate studies, where he was a student of Dr. Paul Tegels and the David P. Dahl Organ Scholar. While at PLU he regularly accompanied, and was a member of, PLU’s two premier choirs, The University Chorale and The Choir of the West. During his first year he performed Haydn’s “Mass in G Major,” also known as the “Little Organ Mass,” on tour with the University Chorale under the direction of Dr. Richard Nance. Upon his graduation with a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance in 2007, Patterson was inducted into the Pinnacle Society, PLU’s highest honor for service to PLU and the community.
Brett Patterson received his Master of Music degree in Organ Performance and Sacred Music from the University of Texas at Austin where he studied with Dr. Gerre Hancock and Dr. Judith Hancock, formerly of St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York. At the University of Texas, Brett sang with the University’s elite choir, The University of Texas Chamber Singers, which performed at the 2009 National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association, Texas Music Educators Association Convention, and at the nationally broadcast debate between Democratic Presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton held on the campus of the University of Texas. Mr. Patterson also sang bass on two new compact disc recordings made by the Chamber Singers.
In the summer of 2008, Brett studied the British cathedral choral tradition at King’s College and St. John’s College, Cambridge; Westminster Cathedral, St. Paul's Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey.
As an organ recitalist, Mr. Patterson has performed throughout the United States and Canada, including The Temple Square Concert Series in Salt Lake City; The Cathedral of the Madeleine, Salt Lake City; Trinity Parish Church, Seattle, WA; Christ Church (Episcopal), Tacoma, WA; Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church, Austin, TX; and Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver, Canada. Additionally, Brett was organist with the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra for a performance of Malcolm Arnold’s A Grand, Grand Overture.
Mr. Patterson has sung on numerous recordings with the Madeleine Choir School, Pacific Lutheran University’s Choir of the West, and the University of Texas Chamber Singers. Mr. Patterson was Bass Section Leader at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Lakewood, WA from 2006-2007. He served as Director of Music at Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown, TX where he was organist and choirmaster and supervised all other musical activities of the parish. From 2009-2013, Mr. Patterson served as Director of Music and Organist at Holy Family Catholic Church in South Ogden, Utah where he directed the parish choir, played for masses and managed and oversaw two concert series for this large suburban parish. He is Organist and Director of Music at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Alexandria, Louisiana, where he directs the choir, plays the organ for all masses and oversees all aspects of Cathedral music. Additionally, he is Director of Diocesan Music and is on the Diocese of Alexandria’s Liturgy Commission. Mr. Patterson is also the producer and host of Music of the Seasons, a weekly radio program broadcast on Radio Maria dedicated to promoting the very best sacred music ranging from Gregorian chant to music of the twenty-first century.
